The curriculum for the Elementary School is divided into 5 grades as follows:

Grade 1

Six-Year-Old   Elementary School

The basic skills advantage that the first graders receive at AEA helps them to excel throughout their school years.

Course DescriptionThe highly acclaimed phonics - first approach to reading, the method used exclusively by AEA, leads to early independence in reading by developing early word - analysis and comprehension skills. By the end of first grade, all students can read with comprehension and write with understanding.

Course Description: Students will increase their thinking skills, improve their reading comprehension and develop their writing ability. By the end of the year, your first grader will be able to write in complete sentences, understand capitalization and punctuation know and use prefixes and suffixes and alphabetize words.

Course Description: Rich in learning strategies, AEA makes Arithmetic a positive, success oriented experience for each student. Using delightful themes and colorful presentations, the course presents concepts in an orderly manner, building on prior learning and including consistent year - long review. Concepts include counting, writing and reading numbers, place value, addition and subtraction, money, graphs, measurement, time, temperature, and fractions.

Course Description: This course will start your student on the road to spelling success. Weekly spelling lists are arranged phonetically so that students will be able to identify sounds they hear with patterns they see.

Text:                            My America and My World

Course Description: Students learn how America was founded and what our basic freedoms are. They are introduced to several famous American patriots and take an imaginary trip across America. Good citizenship is emphasized and reading skills are developed. Other major countries and US territories are also introduced.

Course Description: The study of plants, animals, insects, energy, health, the seasons, and the five senses provide an excellent introduction to science, with an emphasis on building student interest and augmenting the student’s reading skills.

Course Description: The interesting series of studies introduces the First Grader to the importance of good health habits. Nutrition, exercise, proper rest, good posture, safety habits, and good manners are emphasized.

 

 

Grade 2

Seven-Year-Old   Elementary School

AEA’s carefully developed program of study in traditional subjects for second graders places its accent on achievement.

Course DescriptionReading skills are taught using an intensive phonics program, not just a sight reading program garnished with a mattering of phonics. With an intensive phonics approach, even lower ability students can learn to read successfully. During weekly library time, students are able to choose from a great variety of Scholastic titles, and write a written book report on the book of their choice. This expands their vocabulary, stimulates creative thinking and improves their language skills.

Course Description: Ensuring continuous maintenance of skills through spiral review, students are allowed to practice what they have been taught. Concepts added to first arithmetic include simple geometry, multiplication, division and Roman numerals.

Course Description: Second Graders step back into history and learn what life was like in America’s early days. They learn the history of the flag and of patriotic songs and holidays and study the lives of groups that made valuable contributions to our American heritage. The geography of America is interwoven with the historical studies.

Course Description: Second grade students learn to enjoy the natural world as they study the plan for creation. Both reading comprehension and knowledge of scientific concepts are increased as the students learn about the human body, matter and energy, earth and space, and conservation.

Course Description: Special emphasis is placed on cleanliness, good nutrition, proper mental health, courtesy, and safety. Special exercises reinforce the students’ reading comprehension.

 

 

 

Grade 3

Eight-Year-Old   Elementary School

AEA’s program for third graders is strong on skill - building to last a lifetime. The rich array of exercises enables students to immediately apply what they are taught.

Course DescriptionStudents are introduced to classic stories, character - building tales, fantasy and fable, travel and adventure, and stories of patriotism, courage, and humor. Timed reading exercises with quizzes help develop speed and comprehension. During weekly library time, students are able to choose from a great variety of Scholastic titles, and write a written book report on the book of their choice. This expands their vocabulary, stimulates creative thinking and improves their language skills.

Course Description: Third Grade students begin their formal study of English as an academic study. They will benefit from solid skills instruction that will develop their ability to think and to express their thoughts correctly in both written and spoken English.

Course Description: The AEA approach to teaching encourages students to think and apply concepts. A thorough review of concepts learned in First and Second Grades provides the foundation for new material which includes extensive work in multiplication and division, story problems, averaging numbers, standard measures, equations, and adding, subtracting, and reducing fractions.

Course Description: As an integral part of AEA’s Language Arts Program, spelling and poetry is correlated with phonics, composition, vocabulary, penmanship, reading and grammar. Students will readily see how these subjects go hand in hand as tools for the effective use of language.

Course Description: The biographical format of this chronologically arranged introduction to American History makes it easier for students to remember important dates and events and gives them the right kind of heroes and valuable models of good character.

Course Description: Students learn about the human body, with an emphasis on the sense organs and how they work. They explore the world of plants, and animals, becoming familiar with invertebrates and vertebrates and how to classify them. Students will “visit” the ocean, desert, pond, forest, and field, observing plants, vertebrates, and invertebrates in these environments .

Course Description: Third Graders enjoy learning about good posture, personal hygiene, exercise, nutrition, courtesy, first aid, safety, and spiritual growth.

 

 

Grade 4

Nine-Year-Old   Elementary School

Learning to think is the critical emphasis of AEA fourth grade program. Rather than simply giving the students rules, the program takes the students step - by - step through new concepts.

Course DescriptionThis course is designed to enlarge the students’ interests while teaching them to develop their reading speed and power of comprehension. During weekly library time, students are able to choose from a great variety of Scholastic titles, and write a written book report on the book of their choice. This expands their vocabulary, stimulates creative thinking and improves their language skills.

Course Description: This course emphasizes usage and the writing process. Students are given extensive instruction in writing book reports, letters, and encyclopedia reports. Creative writing and the proper use of the dictionary and encyclopedia is also emphasized. Fourth Graders are taught to reduce the size of their writing to one -quarter space.

Course Description: Students are provided with practice covering familiar concepts and new material is added. The four basic processes are covered in greater complexity and the student is introduced to estimation, square measures, writing decimals as fractions, and more geometry. A major emphasis is working with fractions, both proper and improper.

Course Description: Vocabulary study which began in the Second Grade becomes a weekly part of The Fourth Grade Curriculum. As the students mature, the number and complexity of the words increase. Grade Four also includes a phonics key for each lesson.

Course Description: The high interest, inspiring, narrative approach to American History brings to life famous people, major events, scientific advances, changes in ways of travel, communication, and thinking, and the principles that made America great.

Course Description: This course of studies fascinates Fourth Graders from the very beginning by presenting things that they can observe and understand in the world around them. Students learn how to make an insect zoo, how to recognize the plants they see each day, how to use field guides, how to interpret cloud formations, and how to identify rocks.

Course Description: This course of study on physical fitness is achieved by studying the skeletal, muscular, and respiratory systems of the human body. This course also covers the importance of having good relationships with others, the consequences of choosing the right friends, and the necessity of maintaining close family ties.

 

 

Grade 5

Ten-Year-Old   Elementary School

Building confidence and capacity is the goal of the AEA program for fifth graders. This comprehensive skill building approach is simple - and it works.

Course DescriptionThis course is designed to whet the students’ appetites for a wider range of reading and acquaints them with the rich literary heritage of history and nature, the biographies of famous people, and the adventure of other lands and times. During weekly library time, students are able to choose from a great variety of Scholastic titles, and write a written book report on the book of their choice. This expands their vocabulary, stimulates creative thinking and improves their language skills.

Course Description: This course will guide students to a more extensive search in grammar in order to apply their knowledge to create compositions.

Course Description: Emphasis is placed on multiplying by four - digit number and dividing by the three - digit numbers, as well as fractions and measures. Fifth Grade students also work extensively with decimals, comparing, changing to fractions, multiplying decimals by whole numbers, dividing, and rounding off.

Course Description: The emphasis is placed on usage, pronunciation, word – analysis skills as well as quizzes, spelling challenges, dictionary tips and enjoyable word games.

Course Description: The fascinating study of the Eastern Hemisphere by geographical regions begins in the Middle East, where history began, and continuous with the history, geography and culture of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

Course Description: This course leads students from the unknown by teaching important scientific concepts within the context of things they can see and know. The aim is to help them really understand basic principles of science rather than merely learning a science vocabulary.
